Summer Youth Program (SYP)
The Summer Youth Program is the heart of The Food Initiative, and for our youth, it is the entry point into all that we do.
For the summer of 2009, we hired two Dirt Crews with each crew comprised of 11 youth for a total of 22 interns. One Dirt Crew worked the month of June. The other Crew worked the month of July.
We carefully interview and select youth from all of our local public high schools including Middle College and our home school population to participate. We follow strict guidelines that ensure we include diverse youth who will most benefit from our program.
Our process goes directly through our school system, so if you are a rising sophomore, junior, or senior next spring 2010 and you are interested in applying, please check back to this site next spring.
Applications for our summer 2010 program are now available at your high school. Check here for details.

What we're looking for
adapted from "Growing Together", a publication of The Food Project. At the Food Initiative, we want to create a culture that undergirds our efforts and our community. We want a positive, productive, challenging, fun, hopeful, and energetic culture. These hopes have grown out of a belief that nearly anything is possible when people challenge themselves to learn, grow, and contribute from a sense of shared mission.
Once you enter into this atmosphere at The Food Initiative, you enter a totally different world. At The Food Initiative, everyone is equal. This is a world that allows you to speak and not be criticized for your thoughts. You aren't categorized by age, class, or race. In this community, everyone is appreciated and feels needed. The Food Initiative instills in you a respect for one another and the world around you.
If you're looking to get tired, dirty, and deeply satisfied, then The Food Initiative might be for you!
